Lesson 11 wrap up

  • Go back to your thoughts/ideas about technology and mobile devices. Has anything changed as a result of this experience?
  • What were your favorite Cosas/Things and discoveries?
  • Did you connect with others doing the 11.5 Cosas?
  • Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
  • What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or content?
  • Describe your learning experience in one word or in one sentence. We may use your words to promote 11.5 Cosas learning activities to others
I have become more comfortable with mobile devices. I can now take selfies and work more with tablets.
I did not really connect with others using 11.5 ,but I think it is a great program.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn about all the great government resources out there on Frank's Government guide.
I loved being able to sit in on a training session for 11.5.
I am not sure what I would do differently.
Learning Experience in one word: zany!

I had a great time.
Thanks for all your hard work.

Kindle Fire App users – if you are having problems signing into your existing Kindle Fire app, please uninstall the app from your Kindle Device, and install the updated Kindle Fire App currently available in the Amazon Store.

Lesson 10 challenge

write a paragraph about one local and one state or federal government website you explored. How do you think mobile technology will change people’s relationship to government access and services? Will having government services and elected officials “on the go” make us more (or less) democratic as a society?

I explored one local government website,
http://gov.bexar.org/cc/records.html
I explored the Bexar County Clerk website and found that most of the website requires you to create a log-in and password. I was not interested in doing that,so I just looked at the stuff you could look at without the log-in. I did look at the misdemeanor records and discovered that several people were listed as living at Haven for Hope Way. If you committed a misdemeanor, would your employer use that against you? Do you have any recourse?

I explored one federal website:

I like so many features on  this site. I will refer many JSBC patrons to the American Job Center.
www.usa.gov .I find help during job transitions and many other useful links such as Career One Stop Worker Re-employment. Everything looks very useful. I like the fact that you don't have to dig for the information and that it is all here at your fingertips.
I also dabbled in the state department website and have all the information ready for becoming a Foreign Service officer . Ha!

I think that mobile technology will change people's expectations. They will expect more of their elected officials and they will expect more openness and accountability because now so many stats and facts can be tracked. I definitely think that having government services and elected officials "on the go" will make us more democratic because everything will be out in the open.

Lesson 8 part 2 challenge

I looked for Pimsleur Spanish in both One Click Digital and Overdrive.
I actually found One Click Digital easier to search because I did not have to do an advanced search. I just typed in Spanish. However Overdrive does not carry Pimsleur.
On the other hand, do we really get much tech support for One Click Digital? Do we give much help with One Click Digital? Do people come in with lots of One Click Digital questions during the Tech Q and A?

Lesson 6 part 2 Social Media Challenge

How one tweet blew up Justine Sacco's Life

I have been following the author of this article on NPR. He has also written a book called
So You Have Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson. These poor people have lost their jobs and had their lives crumble because of one ill-advised tweet.

The masses on-line were more than willing to crucify these people and participate in their humiliation.

It is very sad.

Lesson 6 Part 1 Challenge

I reconnected with my old friend from High School and an ex-coworker.but it seems that these online connections are flimsier than the real life connections. Does anyone remember the Wild West feel of Social Networking when it first started? We had a patron ,who was semi-homeless, who met a guy from Sweden and managed to get him to send her a ticket to live over there. Stories like that were more common back then.

Lesson 5 Challenge

I am really, really terrible about this. I have been Googling for years, but I don't think I can get better.
I did very badly on the cartoon character stamp query. This is very depressing. Are there more internet keyword search challenges somewhere? It does not seem like the thing one can improve on. You either have the knack for keyword searching or you don't

Lesson 3 Part 2 Libguides

Lesson 3 Part 2 LibGuides

Income Tax Libguides.
http://guides.mysapl.org/incometax

This is a very useful libguide for people seeking tax help from January 2015-April 2015. I really like it because all the library locations are highlighted in a separate section. This is very helpful in Telephone Reference when patrons call specifically wanting VITA library income tax locations.  It also has information on how to make an appointment with the IRS. Patrons are  calling for IRS phone numbers all the time. I usually give them this information if they indicate that they are headed to the local IRS branch on Tesoro Drive.  This is a very handy guide that I use daily.

Learn @ SAPL libguides.
http://guides.mysapl.org/learn

This is a very helpful guide because the list of GED classes(adult education programs in San Antonio) is laid out in an accessible and easy to read format that  I find easier to figure out. The hours of the LEARN at SAPL centers are conveniently displayed as well as the services that they offer. The guide also lists ESL online classrooms and  GED  practice tests.  Patrons often come to the desk looking for GED books. While they are waiting for their books, I suggest that they check out these  resources from their computers at home or from one of our internet computers.

Encino Lib Guide
http://guides.mysapl.org/Encino

I just discovered this libguide. It lists all the information about our new Encino branch. I did not even know about the public art at Encino. I can show this information to curious customers who ask about the drive thru circulation feature. I can also explain the new features such as the digital meeting room called Collaborate and some maker spaces. A cooking demonstration is mentioned. Does Encino have room for a public cooking space in the  maker space? I saw something like that at Denver Public Library.

2 staff libguides

Circulation Libguide
http://guides.mysapl.org/content.php?pid=202110&sid=1846112

Circulation libguide provides helpful clarification on Tex-Share card procedures and gives everyone an overview of how to deal  with difficult and confusing circulation situations. This libguide also links to some important Q and A's by Laura Villanueva. This helps explain circulation policy clearly. This could make a difference to me and fellow reference staff by putting us all on the same page as circulation staff. We will all be in agreement about the procedures.

Overdrive Periodicals
http://guides.mysapl.org/odperiodicals
Hmm, Interesting, So, Overdrive Periodicals requires the use of a NOOK or a Nook APP.
I did not know that, This libguide will be useful when a patron asks about where to get started with online magazines and how to use Overdrive Periodicals. You can read parts of this libguide over the phone to guide a patron or show this to the patron in person.  I looked at the flowchart. It looks like way too much trouble. But, maybe this will clear up confusion. Dud anyone ever use Zinio?

Lesson 3 Part 1 Databases

Academic Search Complete+ Learning Express Library+ Twentieth Century English Poetry
 Researching Dogs and Happiness
. From an article in Academic Search Complete:  According to researcher Corsin Muller of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.   Dogs bumping their noses against a touch screen showing just the tops or bottoms of human faces did well at picking out the happy or mad expressions.

The Dogs, Butterbean and E.D. discovered that they could use computers for more than just picking out human faces.  After learning to read human faces, they learned to read books. With tricks they learned from The Lives of the Monster Dogs by Kirsten Bakis, a book they discovered through Novelist, they constructed costumes and came to visit the Central Library. The well behaved and happy pooches used the Catalog touch screens by bumping their noses against them. They used Learning Express Library to Learn Computer Basics and Word. Happy in their new found knowledge they looked up poems using " dogs " in  the database Twentieth Century English Poetry  using the  Keyword Index.  They were not happy with what they found. Dogs are under represented in Twentieth Century English Poetry. The only line they liked:" The liver-coloured Hitdog halts and looks up  Through the one-way mirror of his pale eye" from the poem  Aside by Fergus Allan.

The two dapper and happy dogs were thrilled to learn that  a certain word  is listed in the

"Keyword in Poem List."

Lesson 2 Part 3 Challenge: Outlook

For some reason, adding a hyperlink to the signature turned out to be more challenging than I thought. I just could not find the hyperlink. Molly McKenna had to help me. Now I know, but I am not sure if I like the way it looks.

: Lesson 2 Part 3 Challenge: Word

I have to say that I found the little video on Word 2010 very informative. I am ashamed to say that it never occurred to me to customize the ribbon despite the fact that I spent 2 YEARS OF MY LIFE MARRIED TO WORD 2010 during school. I know how to do all sorts of things with Word. For example, I can format hanging indents, etc.
I used the flyer templates found under NEW to create my flyer. I now am really quite taken with the idea of customizing the ribbons. At first I found the way that the corrections and changes appear in the word document, confusing. Now I like this feature and am used to it.
